World Suicide Prevention Day: Action and system change

The projects we have worked on alongside our clients are part of the driving force behind transformative change toward suicide prevention efforts in Queensland and wider Australia.

To truly make a difference, organisations must not only innovate but also engage communities, collaborate with local organisations, and empower individuals.

Our mission is to make a positive impact in the social purpose sector (i.e. any org or service that contributes positively to living in Australia) so, naturally, our team is passionate about these projects that can make a real difference! We’ve shared a few real-life examples of them below:

1. Torres & Cape (TC) and Cairns & Hinterland (CH) Suicide Prevention Community Action Plans

A Suicide Prevention Community Action Plan (SPCAP) is a community-wide response to preventing and reducing the impact of suicide through local action across a range of areas. The T&C and C&H SPCAP projects are being led by our team in Far North Queensland.

They offer a coordinated approach to suicide prevention activities across the region. By developing and implementing a systems-based approach to suicide prevention using the Lifespan framework, we're fostering community engagement and facilitating collaboration.

Together, we are making a collective impact that transcends boundaries and changes the course of suicide prevention. Read more at www.lifepromotionfnq.com.au.

2. Designing innovative non-clinical support in the Gold Coast:

As part of the Gold Coast SPCAP, the co-design of a service model that aimed to address situational distress in the Gold Coast community was outlined as a key piece of work.

The project helped redefine support for individuals facing situational distress on the Gold Coast. The innovative non-clinical service reaches those not in contact with the traditional mental health system. This new service will aim to identify people experiencing situational distress in the community and connect them with emotional, practical and coaching support, with a particular focus on linking with a person’s regular GP.

We believe that effective prevention starts with inclusive and accessible support. Read more here.

3. StandBy Support After Suicide:

We've supported StandBy in developing a lived experience framework. This framework outlines their commitment to incorporating lived experiences of suicide bereavement into their work.

By honouring these experiences, we're helping them to build a more empathetic and supportive environment. The Lived Experience Framework will provide the foundation to guide, support and progress lived experience engagement and participation for those engaged with StandBy, and ensure that the voice of lived experience is central to StandBy’s purpose.

4. Safe Havens with Roses in the Ocean:

Collaborating with Roses in the Ocean, a leading organisation representing those with lived experience, we co-designed non-clinical, peer-led Safe Havens across New South Wales. These havens offer compassion and understanding to individuals in crisis, providing an alternative to emergency departments. Check out the project requirements here.

5. Suicide Prevention Care Pathway in Brisbane North:

As part of the Care Pathway project for Brisbane North Primary Health Network, we designed a comprehensive suicide prevention care pathway.

The final product was a pathway that outlines available services and support and guides individuals on what to expect and how to access help. This project was about making the right care accessible at the right time for people who were at risk or required follow up care after suicide.

Supporting organisations in suicide prevention

In all these projects, our goal is clear: to change the landscape of suicide prevention. Through collaboration, innovation, and community engagement, we're making strides toward a world where suicide prevention is not just a concept but a collective action that saves lives.

Working together, we can transform the future of suicide prevention in Australia. If you would like to have a chat about our services in this space, please flick an email to info@beaconstrategies.net or call us.
