Background

StandBy Support After Suicide sought external consultancy support to undertake its next cycle of organisational strategic planning, with a view to consolidate and strengthen its unique identity and position as Australia’s leading provider of suicide postvention services.

Beacon Strategies was previously engaged by StandBy a few years ago to support the development of their former strategic plan, which guided the organisation's consolidation and growth between 2019 and 2021.

A year into this plan, several objectives were achieved earlier than expected due to changes in StandyBy’s external operating environment. This led the StandBy team to review their direction  and objectives to better reflect their current operating environment.

Approach

Beacon Strategies undertook a structured multi-stage planning process to ensure that StandBy’s strategic plan was informed by both internal and external insights. Our 6-step strategic planning process consists of the following:

Stage 1: Looking Internally

  • Captured lived experience perspective from StandBy’s lived experience advisory group

  • Captured the perspectives of several StandBy sites

  • Reviewed achievement against existing strategy

Stage 2: Looking Externally

  • Research and benchmarking process to identify key trends, issues and opportunities in the external environment

Stage 3: Preparing participants

  • Created a  pre-recorded briefing webinar for participants to prompt early  and strategic thinking

Stage 4: Facilitating the planning

  • Planned the session structure and format in conjunction with leaders

  • Facilitated a planning workshop with the StandBy team

Stage 5: Developing the product

  • Developed a new internal and external strategic plan document and tested the product with internal stakeholders 

Stage 6: Supporting change

  • Presented the plan back to the StandBy team with advice around change management

  • Established a quarterly mechanism to support with strategy execution

Outcomes

Following the completion of this project in October 2020, Beacon Strategies delivered both an internal and external strategic plan for StandBy. See the document below:
