Background

West Moreton Health engaged Beacon Strategies to develop an Aborigional and Torres Strait Islander Health Equity strategy aimed at removing systemic barriers that contribute to racial disparities in health outcomes with the view to closing the gap in life expectancy experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the West Moreton region. 

Approach

Our project team worked collaboratively with the West Moreton Health team to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members and elders as well as local health professionals to develop a First Nations specific Health Equity Strategy for the local region. Following consulting with key stakeholders, our project team worked with key West Moreton Health to iteratively develop the strategy, ensuring that it fulfilled legislative requirements and met the needs of the community.

Outcome

The final Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Equity Strategy clearly documented West Moreton’s approach to removing systemic barriers that contribute to racial disparities in health outcomes for First Nations people. The final strategy comprised:

  • Background

  • Health equity strategy focus areas

  • Legislative requirements

  • Priority areas

  • Strategic objectives

  • Priority actions and key performance indicators
