Scoping Digital Capabilities: StandBy - Support After Suicide

Status: Completed June 2021

Client: StandBy - Support After Suicide

Background

StandBy – Support After Suicide was established to meet the need for a coordinated community response to suicide. StandBy is now recognised as Australia’s leading suicide postvention program dedicated to assisting people and communities bereaved or impacted by suicide.

As a part of their organisational strategy, StandBy aimed to increase their awareness, reach and the total number of annual service contacts across Australia, and to achieve a genuine national presence.

To meet demand, StandBy wanted to understand their ‘current state’ digital capability as well as potential ‘future state’ enhancements to deliver more support to individuals, family, friends and communities across Australia.

Before they committed to the organisational change management and the investment involved in enhancing their digital capability, StandBy also sought to better understand the current and upcoming ‘digital market’ relating to suicide prevention and postvention offerings to avoid duplicating existing platforms.

Approach

To effectively evaluate the state of StandBy’s digital capabilities and subsequently plan for the potential change to their future state, the following high-level approaches were undertaken:

Current state

  • Situational analysis - We analysed key documentation to gain an understanding of project context, drivers and desired outcomes relating to StandBy’s digital capacity and opportunities.

  • Client journey mapping - The project team engaged key stakeholders to understand ‘current state’ digital capability through the lens of the client journey.

Future state

  • Market scan - The project team gained an in-depth understanding of the client journey and digital opportunities through scanning the digital market for gaps and competitors.

  • Sense-making - We facilitated a sense-making workshop to develop a shared understanding of all project findings, and establish the feasibility and execution strategy of each ‘future state’ digital enhancement opportunity.

  • Recommendations and implementation planning - We provided recommendations based on workshop outcomes on potential implementation routes with an informed view on next steps and key considerations.

Project Impact

We supported StandBy to understand a range of future options regarding their digital capability. This was important as younger generations who were experiencing the impacts of suicide were more comfortable using digital methods, and needed to have a way to access StandBy services.

  • With this information the organisation were able to make informed decisions about future investments in their digital capability.

  • This would have led to more people having a greater degree of access to the organisation, catering to the various and diverse needs of a growing digital community.
